About Kyoto townhouses
Types of Kyoto townhouses
Although Kyoto townhouses vary in appearance and style depending on the historical context and the family business they represent, this time we will introduce Kyoto townhouses with a tsushi-nikai (a two-story structure with a connecting wall) and a large overhang. Other types of Kyoto townhouses include single-story and two-story buildings.

Kyoto townhouse with two floors
A "tsushi-nikai" is a common architectural style from the Edo period to the Meiji era, characterized by a low ceiling on the second floor and numerous lattice windows made of earth. These lattice windows are said to have served both as a fire prevention measure and a way to prevent people passing by from looking down on them.
Furthermore, this particular Kyoto townhouse is of the "one-row, three-room" type, where three rooms are arranged in a line towards the back, and it condenses the basic elements of a Kyoto townhouse, such as a passageway garden and a firebox.
