Kyoto Landscape Award "Kyoto Machiya Category"
In 2019, Kyoto City established the "Kyoto Machiya Category" in the Kyoto Landscape Award (*) with the aim of recognizing Kyoto townhouses, which are symbols of Kyoto's streetscape, history, and culture, as well as practical examples of preserving and passing on the lifestyle culture that these townhouses convey.
* Kyoto Landscape Awards: Established in 2012, the awards aim to create landscapes that will be appreciated 50 or even 100 years from now, recognizing ingenious landscape creation that harmonizes the inheritance of traditional culture with new creations. To date, there have been three categories: "Outdoor Advertising," "Architecture," and "Landscape Creation Activities," with each category being recognized annually.
1. Overview
(1) Eligibility for recruitment
Recruitment was conducted in the following three categories:
Please note that works that have previously received the Kyoto Landscape Award are not eligible for this award.
A Kyoto townhouse that has undergone desirable repairs and renovations that make the most of its unique charm (*1)
(i) Newly constructed buildings, etc., that are recognized as inheriting the wisdom of Kyoto townhouses (*2)
(c) Individuals or organizations that practice a way of living that preserves the lifestyle and culture of Kyoto townhouses.
*1 The requirement is that the building was constructed before November 22, 1950, and that it meets the definition of a Kyoto townhouse as defined in Article 2, Item 1 of the "Kyoto City Ordinance on the Preservation and Succession of Kyoto Townhouses".

*2 This refers to "newly constructed or renovated buildings," and the requirement is that the building was constructed on or after November 23, 1950.

(5) Holding of the awards ceremony
From a total of 320 entries, after two rounds of judging by the selection committee, 11 entries received the Mayor's Award, 11 received the Excellence Award, and 46 received the Merit Award.

Kyomachiya Charm Promotion Contest - From a Movie to a Movement -
In Kyoto City, as part of its efforts to raise awareness for the preservation and utilization of traditional Kyoto townhouses, the city held the "Kyoto Townhouse Charm Promotion Contest - From Movies to a Movement" in fiscal year 2015.
Many people, including citizens, participated in the selection process for the submitted works, and the following six works were chosen as winning entries. Please take a look at the winning works.
