Designation system based on the Kyoto Machiya Ordinance
To effectively preserve and pass on charming townscapes or unique and sophisticated lifestyles, individual buildings (individual designations) and areas (district designations) are designated.
Once designated, it becomes mandatory to submit a notification at least one year before commencing demolition, and support will be enhanced.
> Status of designation based on the Kyoto Machiya Ordinance
1. What happens if I'm designated as such?
A portion of the costs for repair and landscaping work may be eligible for renovation subsidies.
> Subsidy system for Kyoto townhouses
2. A demolition notification must be submitted at least one year before the start of demolition work.
The purpose of this notification is to allow the Kyoto City government to become aware of the risk of demolition of traditional Kyoto townhouses as quickly as possible, to halt the demolition, and to consider ways to preserve them.
This is not intended to restrict demolition after considering various options.
> Notification required when demolishing a Kyoto townhouse
