Notification when demolishing a Kyoto townhouse

1. Individually designated and Kyoto townhouses within designated areas

 Up until one year before demolition beganIn addition, you will need to notify the Kyoto City government (Kyoto Machiya Preservation and Succession Division).
If a designated Kyoto townhouse is demolished without filing a notification, or more than one year after filing a notification, the person who demolishes it will be subject to a fine of up to 50,000 yen.

As an exception, the submission of a demolition notification may be waived if measures are taken based on an order to demolish the Kyoto townhouse in question under the provisions of other laws (including ordinances), or if the mayor approves that it is not possible to submit the notification one year prior to the start date of demolition due to a disaster or other unavoidable reason. Furthermore, the start date of demolition may be brought forward if it is objectively difficult to preserve or pass on the Kyoto townhouse, or if the mayor approves that consultations regarding the preservation and pass on the Kyoto townhouse have been ongoing with Kyoto City for a considerable period of time.
